The lesion consisted of a degenerative osteoid tissue with giant cells that were well vascularized [1]. At that time, McCance did not put together clinical manifestations and skeletal changes. Several months later the patient recovered from her symptoms. This case history is considered to be the first report of oncogenic osteomalacia. The first correlation of clinical symptoms, osteomalacia and tumor deccribed Prader in 1957 based on the case of giant cell granuloma of the rib [5]. Subsequently described lesions, although given a plethora of names, may be characterized as mostly vascular and mesenchуmal in nature [3]. It has been shown that mesenchymal tumors, associated with oncogenic osteomalacia overexpress fibroblast growth factor-23, a recently described protein capable of inhibiting renal tubular epithelial phosphate transport. This is now thought to be the mechanism underlying most cases of oncogenic osteomalacia [2, 7, 8].</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>Первое описание индуцированной или так называемой опухолевой остеомаляции принадлежит McCance, который в 1947 г. удалил у 15-летней пациентки, страдавшей в течение 2 лет скелетными деформациями и болями в костях и мышцах, васкуляризированный фрагмент бедренной кости с гигантскими клетками [1]. Некоторое время спустя у пациентки исчезли признаки деформации скелета. Описание McCance считается первым упоминанием опухолевой остеомаляции в мировой литературе, тем не менее, на момент публикации своего наблюдения, автор не связывал развитие остеомаляции с опухолью. Впервые взаимосвязь клинических симптомов с изменениями в костях и опухолью заметил Prader в 1957 г. на примере «гигантоклеточной гранулемы» в ребре [5]. Последующие описания схожих состояний описаны в широком диапазоне с различными названиями и характеристиками. Однако, как правило, во всех публикациях упоминалась мезенхимальная природа описываемых новообразований костной ткани и выраженный сосудистый компонент в структуре опухоли [3].
